name nick name

One or several.  Many become defunct.  They track lives, spatially and temporally.  Nicknames segregate old friends and new.  Identify family.  I dislike the nickname applied on  introduction; apparently people can know you well before you can even say hello.  Some people introduce themselves with a nickname.  I feel uncomfortable until I know them.  I also dislike the movie character nickname (seeing the movie and any similarity of personality or appearance is not apparently required).  I like elaborate nicknames, those longer than the real name.  Evolving nicknames.  Original nicknames.  Context is required for a good one.  Unexpected appearances of an old nickname cuts close quickly and disorientates.  Nicknames are affectionate, insulting, soppy, better, unwelcome, changed, too true, unimaginative, ironic.
